Starch topics in palliative care
How do diversity and family structures characterise palliative care? These elective courses combine theoretical knowledge with the analysis of real case vignettes. Students from the 5th semester onwards develop an understanding of cultural sensitivity and complex family dynamics in the last phase of life.
What topics are covered?
The starch topics of the Institute for Diversity Medicine include two elective courses that highlight different aspects of diversity in palliative care.
"When you can't understand patients well - diversity medicine and its characteristics in palliative care"
This seminar examines how diversity characteristics influence palliative care. It will cover the definition and meaning of diversity medicine, cultural sensitivity in care and real-life case vignettes focussing on challenges and solutions. Students learn to recognise the diversity of patients and relatives, to consider cultural backgrounds and the importance of a limited lifespan and to develop their own position on diversity medicine in palliative care.
"Family structures/resources and medical palliative care"
This seminar sheds light on how the entire family and the social structure are affected in the last phase of life. Topics include family systems and reciprocal dependencies as well as palliative GP case vignettes. Students learn to understand the diversity of family systems, to recognise the significance of a limited lifespan for families and to develop their own position on palliative care.
Format and target group
Both seminars are aimed at students from the 5th semester of the Faculty of Medicine at the Ruhr University Bochum. The seminar on diversity medicine is offered three times a year and is open to students in the 5th to 9th semesters.
The courses work with theoretical principles and practical cases in order to promote analytical competences and reflective skills.
